Barrio de Petare, Caracas, Venezuela

In light of the recent news coming out of Venezuela I was reminded of being on assignment in 2005 in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods of Caracas – Barrio Petare. Police would not even enter and gangs of young men paraded around protecting their limited turf with extreme acts of violence. Poverty was so pervasive then, it is hard to imagine the hardships currently being endured by the families now without food or other basic necessities.
